Every day in May – check it out!
This is a pretty cool idea by the guys over at How Small a Trout – make a new post every day in May. Sound simple? It’s not going to be easy I know that much but I sure bet it’s going to be fun! I’m in the middle of exams right now so if I have any truly awful posts then this is my excuse It all kicks off tomorrow, are you going to join in? EDIT: So I’ve been thinking about this over the last 5 minutes and for starters I realised that it kicks off in two days time and not tomorrow (more study time!) and secondly I think I’m going to challenge myself to...

I’m quite excited about this post – probably because I’m really excited about trying out the end result! I like things in fly fishing that are a bit out of the ordinary, a bit out-the-box in their thinking and perhaps most importantly; things that look cool! With the details contained in this post you’re going to be able to change the “What fly are you catching on?” show and tell session with one dam cool streamer. The idea, the photographs and the tying instructions are all courtesy of Paul Rankine who has kindly given his permission for me to post this....

I have a few friends that are members of the Milngavie Fly Dressers club and when one of them mentioned to me that Paul Procter was doing a demo I felt I had to jump at it! If you haven’t heard of Paul, firstly where have you been living? And secondly get researching – he is a wealth of information in all aspects of fly fishing from casting, to fishing techniques and fly tying, and he freely gives away many tips through his blog and other resources. I’d been looking forward to this evening all week, a nice break from the monotony of work and hopefully the kind of demo where...

It’s been a while since I put up a fly tying post so I thought I’d rectify that tonight! Unfortunately not my ties, although I’m definitely going to give them a shot. After I write this I’m going to finish my flies for the Sexyloops board swap and perhaps tie up a few pike streamers. The flies here are from Jay Zimmerman in the United States. So without further-a-do I present the: Clown Show Caddis Banksia Bug Iceman Midge I hope you like these flies as much as I do and give them a...

Thought I’d make my first post on fly tying, so far my fly tying endeavours have been on big, deer hair or foam patterns, mainly because those materials I have absolute masses of! Turk’s Tarantula, Madam X, Hedgehogs and Deer Hair Sedges to name a few. Thing is, I now need to be tying up more imitative patterns for the rivers and for my forthcoming trip to New Zealand – will be heading there for a year starting in June! I’ve got a whole host of materials ordered and a load arrived today but I’m still waiting on the capes and hundreds of hooks. The hooks are...
