How many species?

Have you ever stopped to think about how many species of animals you may come across during a days fishing? It’s not something I have ever really thought about until yesterday when I was fishing away and started to notice a huge number of frogs in the water. It is not a common sight for me at least so that was what triggered my thought of “I wonder how many species I will see today?” Species may not be the correct word as if we take the insect order (if ‘order’ is the right biologogical term in itself!) then I probably came across tens of different species of...

All done and dusted

My posts have been delayed the past couple of days as I had my last exam yesterday followed by the evening celebrations and I can report that my body is still slightly worse for wear as I write this! My university career is now done unless I get the urge in the future to return and do a post-grad degree but at the moment that is not likely in the forseeable future. After my last exam I decided to nip out for a couple hours of fishing before the celebrations kicked in in big style. The weather was lousy but since I’m not able to fish this weekend due to other commitments I thought...

Mixed Weather on the River

It was a late night decision to go fishing, in fact it was on then it was off then it was on again. This was due to the weather forecast which was hinting at a good plummeting of rain in the hills that feed the river we were planning to fish. To top this off Jim sent me a text saying one of the guys had passed the river earlier in the day and it was looking high and dirty. We took the executive decision to leave it until the morning to check river level updates, the weather and the forecast. A gamble was made and off I set to pick up Jim. If you go conditions may be crap and you might not...

Lochs and Small Streams

This update is slightly behind as these trips were about 2 weeks ago. My excuse is that I was busy upgrading this blog and my instruction website – it was a lot of work! I decided to take an exploratory early season trip to a hill loch that has produced good sized fish for me in the past but I had never fished it before summer. This spring has been particularly mild in Scotland so I fancied my chances of there being a hatch and some rising fish moving – hopefully big ones. The weather was fantastic, reasonably light winds and brilliant sunshine and to my surprise when I arrived at...

Fishing, beer, lots of laughs and the BFCC

If anyone has been following this blog for a time, you will remember about a year ago I fished with Steffen from the Sexyloops board whilst in New Zealand. We fished for a week with limited success on a particularly heavily fished river – Steffen Part 1. Apart from the lack of fish landed for a week’s fishing we had a great time and a few weeks ago Steffen informed me of his plans to come over to Scotland to fish for 10 days. He arrived on the 1st of September and we set off the following day. I should warn you now, this is going to be a long one. First plan was to head to Durness...
