Fly fishing in New Zealand

Help protect NZ wilderness

Currently there is planning underway in New Zealand to construct a tunnel from Queenstown to Milford Sound to allow faster travel for tourists. Not only is this going to be going straight through some of the finest pristine wilderness in the country, you won’t even get to use it unless you are booked on a coach with one of the operators! Having fished in this area quite extensively during my time in NZ, something really should be done to stop this. Help by signing the petition, every signature counts! Link to...

Last day fishing in NZ…

Posted by on Jul 14, 2011 in Fly Fishing, New Zealand | 0 comments

… for now! The end of my year in NZ naturally took the form of saying goodbye to the many great people I had met in that country. My final weekend saw me at lunch in Dunedin’s octagon with a good friend and two friends from work – Will and Megan. It was during this lunch that the question was put, what are you doing this afternoon and tomorrow (saturday and sunday)? “Nothing, well… packing as I leave on Monday!” “We are heading fishing if you want to join? Drive up tonight, few beers in the pub, out fishing tomorrow?” There’s no need to go...

Finally uploaded two videos from late March and April. The fishing was with three of my good friends, Charley Will, Pete Williams and Taylor Stone. It was great to get back out after missing two months of the season with a broken foot – too bad late season is hard fishing…. (that’s me getting my excuse in early!)       I have a report still to write about my Aussie trip a month and a half ago, I have some footage of the shootout at the sexyloops meet to upload and I have a link to a fantastic fly fishing movie trailer to share with you. For now I need to go...

Backcountry Trip to Finish the Season

A sad time has come; the end of my New Zealand fishing season. In real terms I could still fish for a month or two but I am going to be in Australia for 10 days and then I have exams. In respect of this it was decided (it didn’t take much convincing!) that a big backcountry trip should be the order of the day to have that one final hurrah before accepting that the trout season is over. With the venues picked, 10 days in which to do it and the cars packed, four guys set off with the best intentions in the world. First stop was Lewis Pass area to have a late season go at those fabled...

The Weekends That Weren’t

Posted by on Apr 12, 2011 in Fly Fishing, New Zealand | 0 comments

April has arrived and that spells the last month of the season for many waters here in New Zealand. Fortunately a lot of the mountain waters remain open until the end of May to give me some more fishing time! I have to make up for the 6 weeks lost with the broken foot afterall. Weekend 1 saw a two day trip to a backcountry river. The drive there was pretty spectacular, the sun was high in the sky and it was warm. Typical that we were driving and not fishing that day. Myself, Char, Tay and Pete arrived at the river in darkness and spent 4 hours hiking up the track in the dark. It’s not...

Two New Videos

That’s March nearly over and I haven’t seen a fish since mid February! My foot is out of the cast though and I am back walking once again. Yesterday I went out for my first casting practice session in what seems an age – I was pleasantly surprised at the results although as always work still to be done. Recently I’ve got some new tackle items – a Nautilus FWX reel, Sci Anglers Sharskin line and a 6# Sage TCX that is in transit. The reel is amazing quality, I’ll do a full write up soon and I’m impressed by the line. Always have like the utimate trout...
