Mixed Weather on the River

Mixed Weather on the River

It was a late night decision to go fishing, in fact it was on then it was off then it was on again. This was due to the weather forecast which was hinting at a good plummeting of rain in the hills that feed the river we were planning to fish. To top this off Jim sent me a text saying one of the guys had passed the river earlier in the day and it was looking high and dirty. We took the executive decision to leave it until the morning to check river level updates, the weather and the forecast. A gamble was made and off I set to pick up Jim. If you go conditions may be crap and you might not...

Lochs and Small Streams

This update is slightly behind as these trips were about 2 weeks ago. My excuse is that I was busy upgrading this blog and my instruction website – it was a lot of work! I decided to take an exploratory early season trip to a hill loch that has produced good sized fish for me in the past but I had never fished it before summer. This spring has been particularly mild in Scotland so I fancied my chances of there being a hatch and some rising fish moving – hopefully big ones. The weather was fantastic, reasonably light winds and brilliant sunshine and to my surprise when I arrived at...

Day 1 and 2

As of writing I now have the first two days of my 2012 trout season under my belt and keeping in line with my last post’s theme I didn’t bother trout fishing! It wasn’t a hard decision; trout by all recent reports are a bit picky depending on weather and insect hatches, not to mention they will get almost all of my attention in later months, pike on the other hand are hunting in the shallows getting ready for their upcoming spawning season. Yesterday I had actually planned to go pike fishing but I slept in by a mere 6 hours so thoughts turned to somewhere a bit more local to...

Pike fly fishing tackle

I was asked if I would write a post on pike fly fishing tackle so here it is! I haven’t been at the pike fly fishing game long at all but the experience of casting very large, bulky flies and hooking into pike lets you in on the secrets pretty quickly. At first I thought I would be able to happily use one of my #6 weight rods, a Sage TCX, which as you probably know is a very stiff, powerful rod. I thought it would cope with pike no problem… wrong. Well, not entirely wrong, it is fine for small jacks and casting smaller flies but that is where the biggest limitation comes in – the flies...

A misty morning

A misty morning

Let me set the scene to start with. Imagine leaving the house before 7am in pitch darkness, the air filled with dense fog and a heavy frost on the ground. You plan to fish a venue that you have never fished before but have instructions from a friend so you are confident you know roughly where you are going. Arriving at your destination after a slower paced drive than normal you are greeted by two young deer prancing across the road. You park up, tackle up and start following the directions. When you arrive near the water the water level is very high, well above the bank and in the fields,...

Brown trout season is done and I’m finally out

Well since my last post, which was two weeks ago, I hadn’t had a fly rod in my hand until yesterday – making it an entire month without the rod. I think that is a record for me, usually it’s a few days tops! I gave a lesson on friday afternoon and seeing as the weather was alright, which for the way it has being going, is a bloody top notch forecast. I made the decision to get out fishing after the lesson for the hour and a half before dark, pike was the target. I tackled up and set to work working the fly around all the various features trying to tempt one of the toothy...
