Another River Visit 27/6/13

After last week’s superb day on the river with Ben I was keen to get out again fairly soon. I checked the weather on Tuesday, Wednesday was looking best with reasonably light winds, blowing upstream and relatively stable temperatures. I tied a few flies, decided that I was going fishing and even with the forward planning of a whole day by the time I’d managed to convince my brother to come fishing it was 2030 Wednesday when we arrived at the water! The first mission was unfinished business with a trout I lost on the last outing, I sat down and waited beside his bush and then...

Fish, Camera, Action!

I was fishing the Lake of Menteith at the weekend and took the 7d on it’s maiden voyage so to speak. Its first time on a fishing trip and first time in a boat and most impressively it lives to tell the tale! I have a bad record with cameras and water… The main message I’ve had drilled into me by others about fishing photography is that you must be prepared not to fish. You can’t fish all day and expect to capture great shots but as long as you’re ok with that it really is quite refreshing. I thoroughly enjoyed being able to down the rod and do something else...

Back in business (Part 1)

The summer here has been abysmal by anyone’s standards. For the past month or so, perhaps more, I can’t remember a single day where there hasn’t been any rain. The weather boffins from the Met Office tell us that it’s because the Jet Stream has been sitting too far South but that it should soon be moving and bringing us some better weather. Fingers crossed eh?! The weather along with other commitments and work has meant my fishing time has been hugely curtailed. I’ve only been out a couple times during my blogging absence but when I’ve been out things have...

How many species?

How many species?

Have you ever stopped to think about how many species of animals you may come across during a days fishing? It’s not something I have ever really thought about until yesterday when I was fishing away and started to notice a huge number of frogs in the water. It is not a common sight for me at least so that was what triggered my thought of “I wonder how many species I will see today?” Species may not be the correct word as if we take the insect order (if ‘order’ is the right biologogical term in itself!) then I probably came across tens of different species of...

All done and dusted

My posts have been delayed the past couple of days as I had my last exam yesterday followed by the evening celebrations and I can report that my body is still slightly worse for wear as I write this! My university career is now done unless I get the urge in the future to return and do a post-grad degree but at the moment that is not likely in the forseeable future. After my last exam I decided to nip out for a couple hours of fishing before the celebrations kicked in in big style. The weather was lousy but since I’m not able to fish this weekend due to other commitments I thought...

Exams and trout

Day 4 and still going strong! I was up at 5am this morning for some last minute study and then it was the beginning of the end… my first exam of my finals. It went well (I think!) but that’s enough of that, afterwards I went fishing! I met up with Craig at 12.30 and things were looking good – sunshine, a few clouds, oh yeah, and a howling cold wind… You just can’t have it all, if the conditions were perfect, catching the trout would be too easy!! Today was the maiden voyage for my new 7′ #4 and what a maiden voyage it had. Its first cast brought a rise, as...
